On behalf of Arturo:

Seattle Tangueros and Tangueras

We are moving Thursday’s opening milonga, Monday’s closing milonga and the scheduled classes on Thursday and Monday from China Harbor to Dance Underground on Capitol Hill. Circumstances well beyond our control will not allow us to have these events at China Harbor this year. A big thank you is due Ilana Rubin for making Dance Underground available to us for these events. All times for the milongas and the classes will remain the same – only the location will change. Dance Underground is located at 340 15th Avenue East, most of you should be familiar with it already. We will be serving snacks and complimentary wine.

Here is the schedule:

            Thursday July 29th

7:30 – 8:45pm Pre-milonga class “Villa Urquiza” style tango taught by Ney Melo and Jennifer Bratt
9:00 – 1:00am “Welcome Milonga” DJ Sabah Chammas from San Diego

The class is $20 and the milonga is $10 - pay at the door only

            Monday August 2nd

8-9:00pm Pre-milonga Chacarera class taught by Patricio and Eva
9:00 – 1:00am “Closing Milonga DJ Jerry Wallach from Portland

The class is $10 and the milonga is $10 - pay at the door only

Special Classes On Monday August 2nd

1-2:30pm – Elements of Milonga taught by Julio and Corina
3-4:30pm – Elements of Valz taught by Julio and Corina
5-6:30pm – Women’s technique taught by Silvina Vals

Classes are $25 for each or $60 for all 3 - pay at the door, no pre-registration.

We apologize for any confusion this change might cause. These milongas and classes have always been a great opening and closing of the festival and we expect them to be again this year

Gracias

Arturo

H All,

Just a reminder that Kathryn McDonald will be teaching Chacarera this
afternoon, 4-5PM, before the Source/Kepler practica. During the rest of
the guided practica we will be preparing our dancing for Tango Magic -
see below for more details. I look forward to dancing and playing with
you this afternoon. *Max*

In preparation for Tango Magic at the end of this month, this Saturday
we will have a very special practica with three topics that will
hugely increase your fun and success at the festival classes and
milongas.

1) 4-5 PM Chacarera lesson with Kathryn McDonald!

Chacarera is a flirtatious and fun Argentine folkloric dance that has
been gaining popularity in milongas around the world, as well as
locally in Seattle. It is a dance of seduction, in which the partners
do not touch! The partner dancing the "male" role instead attempts to
attract the attention of the "female" partner through rhythmic foot
stomping ("zapateo") while the partner playing the "female" role
dances in such a way as to distract the "male" from this demanding
task.

For those of you who have not yet had a class with Kathryn, she has a
fun and *hilarious* approach to teaching Chacarera that you will LOVE
and she will have you rocking the Chacarera floor in 30 minutes or
less. So come to learn the dance for the first time, review your
footwork from last month, or pick up some new and awesome Chacarera
stylings. After this lesson you will be ready to join in and be one
of the "cool kids" when Chacarera is played at Tango Magic, as well as
at Mourad's Sunday milonga, "Shusheta," and any other time Chacarera
is played.

2) Prepare for festival milongas - Dancing in Tight Spaces + Navigation Games.

During the guided practica, Kathryn, Lilly, and I will lead tango
games that help to build spatial awareness and cultivate ease of
dancing under crowded floor conditions.

3) Prepare for festival classes - Max's 10-minute "Study Tips" tutorial.

Ever signed up for a festival workshop with a couple of out-of-town
maestros of tango and arrived to find them in the center of a giant
circle of 50 or more people? Ever then wondered, "How the heck am I
going to learn anything under these conditions?" Well, wonder no
more. Come to the practica this Saturday and Max will share tips for
learning within large workshop conditions gleaned from her years of
training in Cognitive Neuroscience as well as some tips from the
Maestros themselves.

Source/Kepler Practica
Schedule for Saturday, 5/29
4-5 PM Tango Lab: Chacarera with Kathryn MacDonald
5-7 PM Guided Practica with practice games and tips for dancing at a
crowded milonga and strategies for learning in large-format (greater
than 30 people) workshops.
Civetta Dance Center
124 N 103rd St, Seattle
$12 class + practica, $8 practica alone.

Dear Seattle tango community,

I am pleased to launch a new PRACTICA which will be at 505 Studio in Vancouver, BC (Canada), see more details below.

505 Studio is a 1,400 sqft studio with hardwood floors and a very cosy atmosphere. It’s a place where was the Friday all-night milonga at Tango Live 2010. Take a look at the video below to get the feel of the place.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlMgCxo8nWo
(special thanks to Vincent for the nice video!)

PRACTICA “MIX”
Every 1st and 4th Saturday starting July 3rd
8.30-11pm – exchange + practica
505 Hamilton, st. (505 Studio)
$7/$5 for students
Music: Traditional + (30-50%) Alternative*
DJ Tatiana
*Alternative = neotango + electro tango + “alternative/other” for tango
“Mx” code on http://www.allvancouvertango.com

Practica MIX = PEOPLE + EXCHANGE + ATMOSPHERE + FUN + IDEAS

8.30pm – 9pm – warm-up practice
Practicing on your own (traditional music and a bit of non-traditional)

9-10pm – exchange
Either me or some other people offer a step combination or element for practicing, as well as we will take 1-2 new non-traditional compositions and together will practice dancing to that music, thus gradually you will be more and more comfortable in dancing to non-traditional music as well.
We will also practice navigation skills.
If you have a favorite song/ composition and would like to try dancing tango to it, bring it to the exchange and we will try it together (NB not every music piece is suitable for dancing tango but it might be good for a cortina ;))
* on July 3d we will take some vals-like alternative music.

10–11pm – dancing
(even if it’s a practica, I would still encourage tangueros to dance counterclockwise, in the regular line of dancing, if there are a lot of people, please dance in 2 lanes (outer and inner)

Look forward to seeing you in 505 Studio!
I’ve got a pretty decent collection of non-traditional music for tango dancing, which is quite ‘danceable’ and many of these compositions are pretty popular in Europe, and I am sure especially with practice and some tips you will for sure ENJOY this experience! I find dancing to some non-traditional music can be very relaxing, great for changing the mood in a milonga and even therapeutic :) in some way. By the way, a lot of non-traditional tango music I like to play are close in rhythmic structure to vals or milonga and neotango.

If there are a lot of people and enough to keep on dancing then sometimes the practica can be prolonged.

Should you require any advice on where to stay in Vancouver or assistance with orientation in Vancouver, do call or email and I will try to help.

Look forward to seeing you at the Practica Mix!

Saludos,

Hi All,

Have you ever had the experience, as a follower, of not being sure whether or not your leader wanted you to enter the cruzada? Or, as a leader, have you ever *really wanted* your follower to cross and she (or he) didn't? Or been in a situation where you *really didn't want a cross there* but the follower initiated a cruzada anyway?

If the answer to any of these questions is, "Yes!" you may be very excited by the games this afternoon at the Source/Kepler practica. We will be drilling lead and follow technique for the cross and playing around with some unusual variations on the cross. We will also play the "Cross-No-Cross" game, work on double-crossing (!), left-side crosses (!!), and ways to AVOID the cross while making some very nice caminitas.

Source/Kepler Saturday Practica
4-5 Fundamentals class - this week: cruzada with variations
5-7 Guided practica with tango games -
This week: phrasing, elasticity, and styling for caminitas,
unusual cruzadas, and the Cross-No-Cross game)
Civetta Dance Center
124 N 103rd St, Seattle
$12 for the class plus practica, $8 practica only

See you later this afternoon!
