Hey, I'm trying to motivate myself to do more drills and technique exercises and I generally find that social pressure is the best way to keep myself disciplined. So I'm putting together a group of like minded tango dancers to meet up and do drills for an hour at a time a couple of times per week. The scale and location will be determined by the level of interest.
I did this with some friends in Bali and it was by far the biggest change I'd ever seen in a group of tango dancers. Students that were stagnant despite hundreds of dollars spent on private lessons with tango gods were suddenly making real tangible improvements in only a few short weeks. What was particularly impressive was how universal the changes were: advanced dancers were benefiting just as much (formerly) struggling beginners. One of the participants said it was like the "music had suddenly slowed down" and she was free to play with it.
Nearly every experienced dancer knows how powerful this sort of work can be but we often don't do it because it's so easy to put off. I think the answer to this is the incredible power of the Seattle community to help each other to grow. I'd like this to be a community run and community driven non-profit venture aimed at upping the level of dance in Seattle and giving everyone an opportunity to put some hard work into their dance.
