Maximiliano Cristiani Workshops, March 11-22 2025

We’re thrilled to announce that World Champion 2013 and internationally renowned tango maestro Maximiliano Cristiani will be coming to Seattle regularly, creating a continuous series of workshops where each visit builds upon the last. Rather than a one-off event, these sessions form an ongoing learning path that will develop your dance vocabulary, refine your musicality, and deepen your command of dynamics, energy control, and interpretation.

Our first gathering is set for Saturday, March 15th, featuring three interconnected classes. Please check the class schedule & descriptions below.

Class Schedule:

Class Descriptions:

March 13th (Thu), 6:30-8:00pm, Workshop #1: DIAMOND LESSONS*

  • Required for everyone who hasn’t yet studied with Maxi
  • If the time/date is unsuitable for you, please contact Tangocon Loelle Lim (FB) / +1-573-268-9543 (WhatsApp). She will find a way for you!

These are the most important lessons, working for all levels, beginners, intermediate, advanced. In this course, we will work on the most important structures of tango as a way of redesigning our dance and our functionality alongside the comfort of dancing as a priority. Focus areas are, posture, hug, connection, the secrets of maestro’s WAY OF WALKING, eight forwards and backwards. The way of leading/following, melodic eights, rhythmic eights in close embrace, rolling and connecting.
Level: All Levels

March 15th (Sat): EVOLUTIONARY COURSE (Intermediate/Advanced)
12:30-1:40 Workshop #2
1:00-3:45 Workshop #3
4:00-5:15 Workshop #4

The first two will introduce moves supported by detailed technique and body awareness exercises, then each class will incorporate those moves into sequences. The third class will tie everything together, applying all learned elements to various orchestras for a richer musical understanding.

The topics you’ll explore throughout three classes are:

  • colgadas in tango salón
  • centrifugal and super-slow turns (including twists and needles)
  • maximum speed variations (including ganchos, boelos, etc)
  • rhythmical and complex sequences, and alterations.

Learning Objectives:
Dancers will gain practical skills and a more nuanced appreciation for how technique, energy management, and musical expression can merge seamlessly on the dance floor.

March 16th (Sun): COMPETITION INTENSIVE SEMINAR (Intermediate/Advanced)
1:00-2:30 Workshop #5
2:45-4:15 Workshop #6

Competition seminar Intended for all those who want to develop in the performance of competitive tango. The social tango competition (Tango Salon/Tango Pista) does not have any secret formula just because it is a social dance, but yes…we can grow by understanding a lot of information that Maximiliano Cristiani has collected during his 8 years of competition and being in the top positions and being the biggest winner of prizes.

Topics:

  • Understanding different orchestras, melodic, rhythmic…pugliese and la guardia vieja.
  • Learning to count the music, differentiation of phrases.
  • Interpretation of tangos with singers or instrumental tangos and how to dance them.
  • Realization of ideas of linear, circular, rhythmic movements, and the combination of these movements using different musicalities, double time, off-time, syncopated, phrasing…etc…
  • Strategy, Preparation and systematization for a competition round with different orchestras.
  • Transmission of the legacy of old milongueros and their way of seeing tango.
  • Management of the dance floor and spaces to optimize and be able to express the best even when there is little space.
  • Concept and technique of the milonguero system (rhythmic) and melodic system, how to prepare the body for each of the proposals. Musicality: Concepts of phrases, bridges, singer, variation and adagios.
  • Enhanced formula to convert a rhythmic phrase into a melodic one and melodic into a rhythmic one.
  • How and when to open the embrace to perform sequences, theoretical and practical concepts.
  • ROLES: “The evolution of tango”, invisible role change…, formula so that the follower can mark the leader, and the leader knows how to accept and follow the follower.
