Great music of any genre begs to be danced, be it Troilo or Taylor Swift. The dynamic expressivity of our modern, fluid tango embrace, the blending of tango with other dances—these things mix with many kinds of music.

Seattle presently lacks an “Alt Tango” event dedicated to the idea of dancing to a larger variety of music than we hear at traditional milongas. And so, we are launching one—Tangoesque!

On 1st Fridays of each month, your favorite DJs will share their personal collections of alternative music, including tango and “tango nuevo” from the vinyl and digital eras, and danceable music from genres such as blues, folk, fusion, pop, and rock.

We’ll start each evening with a one-hour lesson with Gwen Richard* who will help tune us into our inner tangueros, followed by 3.5 hours of social dance, where all styles and techniques are welcome.

Our DJ for the first event is Barry Hashimoto, who has played golden-age sides in milongas and practicas in the U.S. and abroad since 2005. Barry specializes in playing the definitive transfers and masters of 1925-1980, the classical shellac and vinyl eras. He also played mixed traditional/alternative sets in Atlanta for years, most notably at Danneman’s and Tango Rio together with renowned DJs such as Julian Ingram. His experience as a DJ has been shaped by many nights in the legendary milongas of Buenos Aires and beyond.

*Gwen Richard teaches Beginner and Beginner/Intermediate classes at OmCulture on Monday nights. Gwen has a lovely teaching style that will set you at ease have you dancing better whether you are a beginner or a seasoned dancer. Please join us for a one-hour lesson included with the dance.

As always, OmCulture will provide sumptuous snacks and an open wine bar. We are an inclusive organization where everyone is welcome and everyone gets to dance!
