Rebecca Shulman returns to Seattle, September 24-29, 2026

Rebecca Shulman Tangoes with Seattle
Saturday (9/26) 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Structure and improvisation, plus several techniques for pivots ~ 8 ways to flip the ocho (from back to front, & maybe vice versa…) How many ways can you think of? Experienced dancers will enjoy this trove of options.
Saturday (9/26) 3:00 – 4:30 pm
Joy, melody and yearning ~ Banked and bent salidas & turns: dance a sustained curve through space (including followers adding two specific curves to a straight map, and leaders creating a curving map).
Sunday (9/27) 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Density and dynamics ~ tone muscles of the lower body for grounded stability, but also for a special quality of movement. Â Through brief, contrasting tango sequences, explore how this use of the legs affects the embrace and brings a better partnership.
Sunday (9/27) 3:00 – 4:30 pm
Drama and beauty ~ Extra twist: Shaping the torso not exactly for technique, but for pleasure, panache, and personality! For sinuous insistence! In this class the footwork may be familiar, but you’ll be challenged to sculpt a dance of the whole body.
On Saturday night, Rebecca and Josh will perform at Tony and Ilana‘s milonga, which Rebecca will also DJ, although not at the same time 😉
Classes will be held at Dance Underground, 340 15th Ave E.
The full workshop (4 classes) is discounted to $130.
A single class is $35.

Rebecca lives in New York, began dancing tango in 1991, and traveled frequently to Buenos Aires throughout the 90s, learning from, dancing with, and observing dancers who in their youth had danced in tango’s Golden Age (the 1940s).
She has also taught and performed with a wide variety of today’s finest teachers and performers, including visiting Seattle with about 5 different partners over the decades. She’s been called “unique in her parallel skillsets of being a truly comfortable and skilled social dancer as well as a captivating performer – both as a leader and follower!” (Dan Boccia). Ballet, yoga, and contact improvisation round out her background, and she continues to learn tango both from her various partners and by taking classes whenever she can. All this training and experience makes her “exceptionally versatile as a teacher, enabling her to craft unusually engaging classes and provide detailed, attainable feedback to dancers” (Dan again)
On this visit, Rebecca is very happy to be collaborating with Seattle’s own Josh Rigley, who has lived on the east coast in past years, where they’ve sometimes had the chance to meet up to dance and trade ideas. Josh also has a long history in tango, and a background in other dance and movement forms. While Josh says he just wants to support her work in Seattle, Rebecca, having been improved by his knowledge and inspired by his dancing, wants to share that with you all. Expect him to join her in some of the teaching, particularly on Sunday.
